Participative psychic sleep performance (Monday 21 March 2011)

compiled by Emma Jayne Geraghty
Artist Clodagh Emoe is inviting the public to take part in a psychic sleep performance. She is questioning whether we can experience art through an alternative medium to the visual.

Francis Danby's painting An Attempt to Illustrate The Opening of the Sixth Seal (1828) hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland but Emoe intends to explore the possibility that perhaps we can encounter the painting while not being physically present in front of it.
The next edition of Metaphysical Longings, part of the events at Live8 (curated by Ruby Wallis), called Out of Your Mind, is due to take place on 30 March in Galway and an open invitation has been extended in search of participants. Through this performance the artist asks, "Rather than encountering these images through our visual capacity can we encounter a work of art through that which is beyond of our understanding of sense perception? Is it possible to occasion situations that make manifest that which is not present?"
Emoe is currently researching for a PhD at GradCAM through practice which moves from speculation to that of an active and discursive approach.
