Snips (Friday 17 July 2009)

The 'Snip' report delivered yesterday to the Republic's government recommends some deep cuts that will, if carried though, impact severely on the arts. First, the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism may itself be abolished. Second, the Arts Council faces a cut of €6.1m. Third, Culture Ireland may be scrapped.
What the report recommends and what actually will actually happen are two different things; however, the cuts to the cultural sector are liable to go relatively unnoticed by the general public and politicians, given the massive cuts proposed in other areas funded by the government.
More on arts cuts here.
